who we are

Welcome to GoWarm – the home of the most successful area-based initiative.

Set up in 2007, to tackle fuel poverty and improve energy efficiency in domestic properties, GoWarm has expanded from its original core base in the North East of England and now has operations in North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and across the East of England- including Norwich, Norfolk, Cambridge and Peterborough – and recently delivered specialist projects in Birmingham, Manchester and Luton.

Working with 23 Local Authorities, several RSLs and many of the major utilities, the GoWarm project  has gone from strength to strength.

The six-step approach – marketing, assessing, data analysis, surveying, installing and benefits advice – adopted by GoWarm has seen the team assist more than 250,000 homes since the beginning of 2008 and pull in £1.5million in unclaimed benefits for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Our experience in community engagement and door-step assessing has been used the length and breadth of the country to tackle fuel poverty, and more recently do support gas network extension projects and other projects which involved collecting data on the door step.

From April ’10 in addition to our core business, GoWarm will be able to provide free standard gas connections to people over 70, those in receipt of certain benefits, or those who spend more than 10% per cent of their annual income on heating their home or live in a designated area.

what we do

cavity wall insulation

An un-insulated home can lose up to 35% of its heat through the walls so it is easy to see where significant savings on energy bills can be made. Insulating the cavity between the walls will save you around £115 per year.

Grants, provided by the Government through energy companies, are available to all homeowners and GoWarm can access this funding to minimise the cost of installation of your cavity wall insulation.

Many people will qualify for free Cavity Wall Insulation, for those who don’t, we can subsidise the  installation cost and you can have the work carried out for just £129 – compared against the typical cost of £500.

An added bonus is that you can be safe in the knowledge you are doing something to help the environment by saving around 610kgs per year of carbon dioxide emissions.

loft insulation

It has never been more important to think about insulating your loft. Without proper insulation a lot of the valuable, expensive energy you use to heat your home will be lost through the loft.

The recommended depth for mineral wool loft insulation is 270mm – a loft insulated to this depth could save you around £150 a year on your fuel bills, keeping warmth exactly where you need it – indoors.

Many people will qualify for free Loft Insulation, for those who don’t, we can subsidise the installation cost and you can have the work carried out for as little as £129 – compared against the typical cost of £300.

So insulating your loft – or topping up any insulation you already have – will help to heat your home more efficiently. Using less energy reduces carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), one of the biggest causes of climate change – whilst also saving you money.

solar panels

CES

Solar PanelsGoSolar is a brand owned by the CES Group of companies. CES is a non-profit distributing community interest company. They offer advice and assistance to social housing providers, local authorities, businesses and individual householders on how to to reduce their energy bills, eliminate fuel poverty and cut carbon emission through the installation of eco-friendly, renewable and innovative technologies.

Solar Photovoltaics

Solar Photovoltaics (PV) are systems which generate free zero carbon electricity from sunlight.

GoSolar, using our extensive experience within the renewables market, have established a best value offering for our customers using UK manufactured parts and quality workmanship while maintaining some of the lowest prices available. These low prices, combined with the Feed in Tariff make for an excellent investment opportunity.

GoSolar will provide a quality professional service at every stage of the Solar Panel installation from the initial enquiry and survey to the final registration process for the Feed in Tariff. We will also carry out planning checks through your local planning authority to cover the installation of the Solar panels, and where relevant from the electrical Network Operator for connection to the grid.

Once you contact the GoSolar team, there will be 3 visits to your home.

  • The initial survey will be carried out by our GoSolar team. They will take the key information of your property and tell you what sizes of PV system are suitable and carry out a full structural survey.
  • Our GoSolar Installer will then visit you to clarify the system price, provide an official quotation for you and confirm price of any additional work that may be required for installation.
  • Upon acceptance of the full quotation the Installer will proceed with the installation process. The Installation typically takes between 2 to 3 days. Once complete you will be presented with your Solar PV customer pack which will include documents such as your MCS certificate, commissioning documents and final invoice. We will also include an application form to register for the the Feed in Tariff, completed on your behalf. You can then sign this and send on to your energy provider.

Solar PV - Savings From Sunlight

Solar PanelsSolar PV panels are mounted on the roof of your home. They comprise of a number of cells made from two layers of material that generate electricity when exposed to sunlight. The stronger the sunshine, the more they produce but they still work even on a cloudy day.

  •  Solar electricity is 100% green and releases zero carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.
  • A solar PV system can generate up to 50% of the electricity needed to power a typical home in a full year.
  • There are no moving parts and usually no maintenance required.
  • The solar PV panels carry a 5 year workmanship guarantee and a full 25 year power warranty. The inverter that converts solar power into mains electricity (which usually sits in your loft) has a 5 year extendible manufacturer's warranty. Your installer will guarantee their workmanship for 12 months after the system has been commissioned.
  • GoSolar systems and installers are registered under the Government's Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) - your guarantee of quality and performance.

How You Make Money From Solar PV

The Feed in Tariff is a new government-backed initiative to make it more than worth your while to use electricity from renewable sources.

  • When you install a solar PV system you will be paid 41.3 pence for every unit of electricity it generates.
  • Payments are tax free and index linked, so they increase every year in line with inflation for a total of 25 years.
  • A bonus payment of at least 3 pence per unit is paid on top of the generation payment for every unit you export to the electricity grid.
  • All of the electricity you generate, and use in your home, replaces mains power and is typically worth 13 pence per unit. This is equivalent to savings of between £100 and £200 a year at today's prices.

Total first year benefits £1,060

Total benefits (income and savings) after 25 years could amount to approximately £35,000 as electricity prices rise and Feed in Tariff payments increase with inflation.

Projections are based on a typical mid-sized 2.7kWp solar PV system generating 2,160 kWh per annum.

Assumptions of Solar PV

† The financial figures presented are based on estimated units generated. This is variable and figures may be higher or lower during the 25 year Feed in Tariff period. The assumptions and estimates used to present these figures are:

  • It is assumed that a PV array will generate 800 kilowatt hours per year per kW of installed PV. This is multiplied by the generation tariff 41.3p. Half of this generated output is deemed to be exported at 3p per kWh. This gives the total Feed in Tariff per year. All Feed in Tariff payments are tax free and index linked.
  • Half of the generated output is estimated to be used in the home, which displaces energy which would have been imported and bought at an assumed rate of 12.76p per kWh. This represents annual electricity savings. Estimates predict a rise in electricity prices of 5% per year. This would offset the expected fall in systems output at the rate of 0.5% per year.
  • FiT will track inflation, the official assumption being 2.4%, every year for the 25 year lifespan.

New Borough to GoWarm

Thousands more homes across the North East will benefit from a partnership formed by GoWarm and a Teesside Council.

Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council is the most recent council to link up with GoWarm to help their area in the fight against fuel poverty.

GoWarm, which aims to reduce fuel poverty and ensure that households are as energy efficient as possible, has already begun assessing the 30,000 households in Redcar & Cleveland that could benefit.

The homes currently being assessed are spread across the Redcar wards of Kirkleatham, Zetland and Dormanstown Once these wards are complete, Go Warm will move on to other areas within the Borough.

Karen Hindhaugh, director of GoWarm, said:

"It is essential that innovative and forward thinking councils concentrate their efforts in fighting fuel poverty in their wards, this in turn will promote a reduction of carbon emissions from their borough and lead to residents benefiting from homes with increased energy efficiency."

"This is great news for the residents of Redcar & Cleveland, and we urge them to welcome our Assessors who all carry identity badges and can be easily spotted by their forest green uniforms."

For those who are worried that they may miss the assessors calling, they can visit the GoWarm website (www.gowarm.org.uk), which boasts a special feature that allows people to self assess online. Alternatively householders can call 01642 777976 to speak to an advisor and ensure they receive an assessment.

The Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing & Neighbourhood Renewal, Councillor Lynn Pallister said :

"Our partnership with Go Warm is an excellent opportunity for households still in need of insulation and heating works to get help that may otherwise be unavailable to them. The scheme offers great discounts that anybody can access, even if they do not qualify for a full grant."

GoWarm focuses on delivering insulation and heating measures, benefits assistance and energy advice to home owners in deprived pockets within areas of the North East that so far have been overlooked by schemes offered by other organisations.

The GoWarm team is currently working in Chester Le Street, Teesdale, Middlesbrough, Sedgefield, Stockton, City of Durham, Wear Valley, Derwentside and Easington and has already made an impact on residents in these patches. Many have had cavity wall and loft insulation installed and many benefits unlocked to which they didn’t know they were entitled.

GoWarm goes live with state of the art hand held computers

A North East organisation has invested a pot of money in a bid to change doorstep assessments forever. GoWarm Assessors have trialed hand held computers, which will now replace the traditional paper-based assessment method.

The assessors are visiting households across the region to establish if there are any measures that can be introduced into the home to ensure that it is as energy efficient and comfortable as possible. Once a property has its measures installed, the project team then help residents with a free benefits check.

Assessors will now be able to input the assessment results directly into the hand held terminal so the information is sent straight from people’s homes to the GoWarm database.

GoWarm has invested £15,000 to develop the software and interface of the hand held computers which were designed by Universal Systems Solutions (USS), a North Eastern IT company which installs and supports IT infrastructures.

Stephanie Hansell, Assessing Manager, GoWarm said:

“Whilst there was a lot of work involved in ensuring that the hand helds captured the correct information and that they would perform as we wanted, the training was in fact quite simple. The hand helds are so user friendly, the Assessors were comfortable using them after a very short time!”

Karen Hindhaugh, Director, GoWarm, said:

“The main benefit of using the new hand held computer is that it is a live system, which not only keeps us up-to-date with technology, but also cuts out hours of data processing by our admin staff. Money previously spent on data processing can now be redirected towards ensuring that there are plenty of Assessors visiting households within our designated areas.”

As well as speeding up the assessment process, the terminals also act as safety devices for the Assessors who are inputting household data live and on-site, and therefore, can be exactly located by the GoWarm headquarters.

GoWarm is an organisation focusing on delivering insulation and heating measures, benefits assistance and energy advice to home owners in communities across the North East that so far have missed out on schemes offered by other organisations.

Currently working in Chester Le Street, Middlesbrough, Sedgefield, Stockton, City of Durham, Wear Valley, Derwentside and Easington, GoWarm has just started in Redcar and Teesdale.

Since the start of the year over 58,000 homes have been visited by GoWarm, who so far have installed measures in 13,000 homes. The benefits advice team has unlocked £300,000 for home owners, and is on target to hit a total of £800,000 by the end of 2008.

GoWarm was launched with support from DEFRA’s Community Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) and has funding from National Grid and ScottishPower.

energy advice

One of the principal aims of the GoWarm project is to reduce energy bills by reducing the amount of energy used in homes throughout the target area.

As well as carrying out insulation and other work, the team will deliver energy advice for people face to face in their own homes. This will be given by the surveyor when he visits to see what other work needs to be done.

The advice will include simple tips like turning heating thermostats down by one or more degrees and installing simple draught proofing.

Tips to save energy in your home

  • Cavity Wall Insulation
Up to 35% of heat is lost through the walls of your home. Insulating your cavity walls can save up to £100 per year.
  • Loft Insulation
An uninsulated or poorly insulated loft can account for 25% of the heat loss from a typical house. Insulating your loft can save £80-£100 per year.
  • Heating
Keep a regular check on thermostats. Turning down 1oC can save up to 10% on energy consumption.
  • Washing
A shower rather than a bath uses, on average, one fifth of the hot water.
  • Hot Water Tank
Make sure it is properly lagged with a minimum 80mm jacket.
  • Laundry
Wash clothes at 40oC – a quarter of the cost of the hottest cycle.
  • Low Energy Lamps
Low energy lamps use one fifth of the energy of an ordinary light bulb. Energy cost savings over the lifetime of the lamps £50-£60.
  • Doors and Windows
Draught proofing saves heat loss and improves the comfort of your home.
  • Fridges/Freezers
Locate in a cool place. Defrost regularly.
  • Kettles
Boil only as much water as needed for immediate use.
  • Cooking
Microwave ovens use up to 75% less energy to heat food than conventional cookers.
  • Energy Efficiency Labelling
Look out for the energy label next time you purchase a fridge, freezer or a laundry appliance. Purchase the most efficient that you can afford.
