who we are |
Welcome to GoWarm – the home of the most successful area-based initiative. Working with 23 Local Authorities, several RSLs and many of the major utilities, the GoWarm project has gone from strength to strength. The six-step approach – marketing, assessing, data analysis, surveying, installing and benefits advice – adopted by GoWarm has seen the team assist more than 250,000 homes since the beginning of 2008 and pull in £1.5million in unclaimed benefits for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Our experience in community engagement and door-step assessing has been used the length and breadth of the country to tackle fuel poverty, and more recently do support gas network extension projects and other projects which involved collecting data on the door step. From April ’10 in addition to our core business, GoWarm will be able to provide free standard gas connections to people over 70, those in receipt of certain benefits, or those who spend more than 10% per cent of their annual income on heating their home or live in a designated area. cavity wall insulation |
An un-insulated home can lose up to 35% of its heat through the walls so it is easy to see where significant savings on energy bills can be made. Insulating the cavity between the walls will save you around £115 per year. Grants, provided by the Government through energy companies, are available to all homeowners and GoWarm can access this funding to minimise the cost of installation of your cavity wall insulation. Many people will qualify for free Cavity Wall Insulation, for those who don’t, we can subsidise the installation cost and you can have the work carried out for just £129 – compared against the typical cost of £500. An added bonus is that you can be safe in the knowledge you are doing something to help the environment by saving around 610kgs per year of carbon dioxide emissions. |

loft insulation |
It has never been more important to think about insulating your loft. Without proper insulation a lot of the valuable, expensive energy you use to heat your home will be lost through the loft. The recommended depth for mineral wool loft insulation is 270mm – a loft insulated to this depth could save you around £150 a year on your fuel bills, keeping warmth exactly where you need it – indoors. Many people will qualify for free Loft Insulation, for those who don’t, we can subsidise the installation cost and you can have the work carried out for as little as £129 – compared against the typical cost of £300. So insulating your loft – or topping up any insulation you already have – will help to heat your home more efficiently. Using less energy reduces carbon dioxide emissions (CO2), one of the biggest causes of climate change – whilst also saving you money. For all you need to know about loft insulation - click here |

community engagement |
GoWarm’s area of expertise is in community engagement, carrying out door-to-door, street-by-street assessments, collating and analysing data in bespoke data bases and reporting on the activity. It has successfully completed more than 250,000 full door-step assessments over the past two years. Over the past 24 months, partnering with its sister subsidiaries CES North East and CES Yorkshire & Humber, this work has been extended to support several community gas network extension projects with the GoWarm team carrying out the vital door-step assessment process to find those homes off the gas network, to determine whether they want a connection and whether they would be interested in a heating system. GoWarm has also partnered with E.ON to work in Luton, Manchester, Birmingham, South Staffordshire and Teesdale to carry our doorstep assessments to identify homes in fuel poverty that could benefit from a package of free energy efficiency measures worth more than £15,000 per property. |

Thousands more homes across the North East will benefit from a partnership formed by GoWarm and a Teesside Council. Karen Hindhaugh, director of GoWarm, said: "It is essential that innovative and forward thinking councils concentrate their efforts in fighting fuel poverty in their wards, this in turn will promote a reduction of carbon emissions from their borough and lead to residents benefiting from homes with increased energy efficiency." "Our partnership with Go Warm is an excellent opportunity for households still in need of insulation and heating works to get help that may otherwise be unavailable to them. The scheme offers great discounts that anybody can access, even if they do not qualify for a full grant." GoWarm focuses on delivering insulation and heating measures, benefits assistance and energy advice to home owners in deprived pockets within areas of the North East that so far have been overlooked by schemes offered by other organisations. The GoWarm team is currently working in Chester Le Street, Teesdale, Middlesbrough, Sedgefield, Stockton, City of Durham, Wear Valley, Derwentside and Easington and has already made an impact on residents in these patches. Many have had cavity wall and loft insulation installed and many benefits unlocked to which they didn’t know they were entitled. Back to News Listings <<---------->> Back to Top of Page <<---------->> Print Article A North East organisation has invested a pot of money in a bid to change doorstep assessments forever. GoWarm Assessors have trialed hand held computers, which will now replace the traditional paper-based assessment method. The assessors are visiting households across the region to establish if there are any measures that can be introduced into the home to ensure that it is as energy efficient and comfortable as possible. Once a property has its measures installed, the project team then help residents with a free benefits check. Assessors will now be able to input the assessment results directly into the hand held terminal so the information is sent straight from people’s homes to the GoWarm database. GoWarm has invested £15,000 to develop the software and interface of the hand held computers which were designed by Universal Systems Solutions (USS), a North Eastern IT company which installs and supports IT infrastructures. Stephanie Hansell, Assessing Manager, GoWarm said: “Whilst there was a lot of work involved in ensuring that the hand helds captured the correct information and that they would perform as we wanted, the training was in fact quite simple. The hand helds are so user friendly, the Assessors were comfortable using them after a very short time!” Karen Hindhaugh, Director, GoWarm, said: “The main benefit of using the new hand held computer is that it is a live system, which not only keeps us up-to-date with technology, but also cuts out hours of data processing by our admin staff. Money previously spent on data processing can now be redirected towards ensuring that there are plenty of Assessors visiting households within our designated areas.” As well as speeding up the assessment process, the terminals also act as safety devices for the Assessors who are inputting household data live and on-site, and therefore, can be exactly located by the GoWarm headquarters. GoWarm is an organisation focusing on delivering insulation and heating measures, benefits assistance and energy advice to home owners in communities across the North East that so far have missed out on schemes offered by other organisations. Currently working in Chester Le Street, Middlesbrough, Sedgefield, Stockton, City of Durham, Wear Valley, Derwentside and Easington, GoWarm has just started in Redcar and Teesdale. Since the start of the year over 58,000 homes have been visited by GoWarm, who so far have installed measures in 13,000 homes. The benefits advice team has unlocked £300,000 for home owners, and is on target to hit a total of £800,000 by the end of 2008. GoWarm was launched with support from DEFRA’s Community Energy Efficiency Fund (CEEF) and has funding from National Grid and ScottishPower. energy advice |
One of the principal aims of the GoWarm project is to reduce energy bills by reducing the amount of energy used in homes throughout the target area. As well as carrying out insulation and other work, the team will deliver energy advice for people face to face in their own homes. This will be given by the surveyor when he visits to see what other work needs to be done. The advice will include simple tips like turning heating thermostats down by one or more degrees and installing simple draught proofing. Tips to save energy in your home
