loft insulation - all you need to know
|
|
Loft insulation is effective and it will pay for itself over and over again. The better insulated your home, the less energy you need to keep it warm - the more money you'll save in the long run.
Most UK houses have some degree of loft insulation, but the majority with 150mm or less should be substantially topped up to 270mm. Nine million homes are insulated to 100mm, a thickness which has not been considered adequate since the early 1980's.
To get the most benefit out of loft insulation you need to insulate across the top of the ceiling joists as well as between them. Pipes and tanks also need to be insulated to avoid freezing. Other key considerations include ventilation to avoid condensation in the loft, access, safety aspects of electrical wiring and fittings.
Loft insulation will last for at least 40 years so it will pay for itself each year by saving you money on your fuel bills. Also by making this change and saving energy you will be producing less CO2 one of the biggest contributions to Climate change. |
